Why do all of my cats like to sniff each others behinds?!?

I have 5 cats. All of them sniff each others butt’s. It’s gross yet funny because they make these funny faces. We have a new kitten and he even does it (not as much as the others). Why do cats do this?! Sometimes they even clean each others behinds..why?

cats and dogs have anal glands that are located on/inside their rectum about 4 and 6 o’clock; this is their "scent" glands and are expressed when they have a bowel movement. Basically, the cats are getting to know each other scents and learning who is the alpha cat in the house

It’s one of those less charming things that cats (and dogs) do. It’s a way of telling one cat from another. When a cat greets you by sticking its tail straight up in the air, it’s inviting you to have a sniff. It’s something they do as kittens so that mother can tell them apart.

Same as dogs. Saying hello, or for recognation. Also its a way they act as a family, or pack, again, kinda like dogs!

All animals do this. They are getting information on each other and socializing.

it’s the same thing that dogs do.
it’s just how they meet and greet each other. Don’t worry about it.
