We adopted a kitten 2wks ago. She is diagnosed with roundworm. How do we know if we are affected?

Our family consists of two children (10 &7) and two adults. The kitten has had a treatment and is due another one in a week. I might be just paranoid since I know the kitten is sick and now my youngest has a stomachache. I had stomach cramps last week.

Are roundworms a danger to me or my family?

Roundworms can be a health risk for humans. The most common source of human infection is by ingesting eggs which have come from soil contaminated with cat (or dog) feces.

As many as 10,000 cases of roundworm infection in humans have been reported in one year in the United States. Children, in particular, are at risk for health problems should they become infected. A variety of organs may be affected as the larvae migrate through the body. In suitable environments, the eggs may remain infective to humans (and to cats) for years.

My kitten had them when I 1st got her and we never got them. Unless you have cat feces laying around your yard or house and your kids are playing in it, you have nothing to worry about. Just make sure the litter box is always cleaned out.

Roundworm is something most baby cats have, and it usually is easily treated, even when it’s symptomatic.
They get it from mother’s milk.
No, it wouldn’t be giving you stomach problems- unless you were exposed to the feces of the cat and somehow ingested it…typically children who play in sandboxes have a high chance of exposure, because of course if it’s left uncovered
cats will use it. The child then gets feces under nails, and feces gets ingested.
Your cat has been treated- all baby cats are usually "wormed" after 6-8 weeks- and maybe you’re giving yourself a stomach ache from worrying about it.
I have to tell you, I have worked with cats & kittens for 20+
years, and never heard of or gotten roundworm, so don’t read the answer about "10,000 people a year" and freak out.
Feces has to be ingested. Wash hands, enjoy kitten.

First ask your vet if you can get it, and then go to your doctors and see if you have it no matter what your vet says!!!!!!!!!!
