My cat walks funny but not in any pain- whats wrong?

My cat is a little over a year old and has always walked a little funny. He runs, jumps, plays and everything just fine and never in pain. Super happy. He just seems to walk a little strange. Someone made the comment that he looks like he is wearing high heals. Which is almost a perfect way to describe it. It’s like a very dramatic woman’s sway with both back legs going out to the side…any ideas why this is happening? again, no pain or anything negative. just curious

Has this cat seen a vet since you got him? It might just be the way he walks, or he might be in pain and just doing his best not to give into it.

Cats should see a vet once a year to make sure they are healthy and the vet can tell you if this is normal for your cat or the sign of an issue

If he has not been to the vet yet this would be a good time to take him — he may have a birth defect (nothing to be upset about) which Xrays or an exam may help discover.

I had a cat like that once..It always looked like his back legs were too long for his front legs! But it didn’t seem to stop him from being a normal cat..just looked a little funny sometimes! lol
People walk differently too..just another thing that makes us unique..

    dear bunny,

I had a cat who passed away this year after 18 years with us and she always from the time I got her as a kitten walked as I finally figured out what she looked like, an elephant. She would sway right to left and left to right. I figured that there was some type of defect with her hips and she would probably have arthritis when she got older, which she did and I had her on liquid glucosamine for several years when she showed signs of being in discomfort. Your little guy may have a slight problem with his "ankle?" joints. The only way to find out for sure is to have him checked by a vet and possibly some xrays of his legs. Then again he may not have anything wrong and just walk a little strange. I hope this is of some help to you and Happy Holidays.

Maybe it’s just a mannerism it developed very young. Don’t sweat it. Just mention it next time he has to go to the vet.

Did the vet examine him? I have one who has a floating patella (the kneecap slids off the end of the bone and is painful), she arches her back up to try keeping weight off that back leg. It’s not operable, if she was a dog she’d be walking on three legs with the hurt one up off the ground but cats don’t do that. She doesn’t SHOW she’s in pain, but it does hurt her. It’s not operable and we make sure she’s not up on high things when she’s arching her back that much.

Another has an odd hip structure, he walks like a sailor with the back end. It eventually turned arthritic, which we try to help him with by having his sleep area cushioned with a heat reflective sheepskin.

Have your vet evaluate the problem, you never know what’s going on till you get an actual diagnosis.

Check to make sure there is nothing stuck in between the pads on his back paws, if there is nothing there take him to the vet just to be sure nothing is wrong. He doesn’t seem like he is in pain because cats see pain as a sign of weakness, even if the pain is there own.
